I joined recently ans went ahead and purchased the kit. We have one quilt shop locally and it's just not my style. There are several shops all over this part of NC but the closest one is aboit 25 miles with the rest a whole lot farther - and besides I'm just plain lazy!!!! The fabrics in the kit are exactly what I like with a few that will stretch my colorbox. I have everything printed out so far and just need to get a good sized binder - will put the pages into clear top loading pages. I like binders!!! Sure hope mine come out as beautifully as yours. Need to clean a few things cleaned up so I can reach my machine.

Nice block, Christine!

I will be following along but not starting it yet. I have a few sewing projects I want to finish first.

I wasn't going to do this one as the quilts ready to quilt are stacking up. But maybe I will. These blocks are 12 inchers and that would add up fast. I STILL have this huge tub of fresh lilac fabrics and scraps that have been calling to me. Anxious to see Ladyinpurple's blocks with the kit. Sew glad to see this thread up. It's my social media.

I'm so glad your thread was approved. Thanks for doing this for us. This is my Block #1. I haven't made any alternate blocks yet.

lawsonmugs 09-25-2017 07:43 AM

Christine your is beautiful. Bonnie wish you would sew along too. Marcia you know you want to join in too.lol Come on Connie. lol

joe'smom 09-25-2017 08:31 AM

I'll be following along again, but not sewing. I'll have to build up my collection of Civil War prints before I can do justice to these patterns.

Beautiful blocks, Christine and Mary! It's amazing how different the blocks can look depending on the fabric choices.

sewbizgirl 09-25-2017 10:21 AM

Pretty first block, Mary! I like your fabric choices.

I might... just for the camaraderie. I didn't like this quilt at all, at first, but now it's starting to grow on me. Might squeeze in the time for a block a week. We'll see how I do with my other projects.

It's funny you said this... because I was thinking of doing this one with other-than-civil-war fabrics. :D I do have a lot of them collected tho, from Rest and Refreshing. I also have a huge stash of 1930's repros left from a Farmer's Wife quilt. I might use my 30's!

sewbizgirl 09-25-2017 10:23 AM

So... are all the center blocks 8" squares, surrounded by the star parts that make it into a 12" block?

frustratedquilter40 09-25-2017 11:43 AM

Mary lovely Block! I have printed block #2 but not started still working on the full alternate blocks have a few done.

Well I got my second block done today. I have been using fabrics I have on hand and not worrying about civil war prints. Bonnie, center is 6 1/2" unfinished. Block is 12 1/2 unfinished. On both 1 & 2 blocks.

lawsonmugs 09-25-2017 12:10 PM

Christine, I haven't started on my alter. blocks. I need more neutrals . I guess I will do them as I go once I get the neutrals. The last quilt I waited and did all the 9 patch blocks last. I was so bored making them by the end.

letawellman 09-25-2017 01:58 PM

Hi everyone!
So, this will be my first BOW... I'm usually more focused on the UFO Challenge and the Fabric Moratorium Challenge. I have been so SLACK on the UFO thread lately... but have done very well on the Moratorium... until last week, that is.

Christine and Mary, your blocks are just BEAUTIFUL!!

And LadyinPurple, you probably aren't too terribly far from me... I work in Charlotte, so perhaps we can get together sometime. We could go on our own little "Shop Hop" if you like.

And the comment about Civil War repro or not... well, I have a nice little stash of those... as well as the 1930's repro's... I may just do this in both colorways (I'm such a glutton for punishment! :D)

Hopefully, I'll get in soon enough to get the first block. If not, 99 cents is not going to break the bank. Now, I need to check my email and see if it's come in yet.

Jaiade 09-25-2017 02:12 PM

I'm glad I found this(still finding my way around the board). I have downloaded everything, but still not sure about fabrics. In the mean time I'll follow along on this thread. I'm liking what you ladies are producing so far! Are you using the same fabrics for your alternate blocks as the background of the star blocks?

Glad to see some new people and some of the regulars. Letawellman, My son is a well digger. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with your screenname. Or maybe your real name is Leta Wellman, anyway welcome too. lol Jaiade I just today ordered several neutrals and am going to use them for the alter. blocks. I usually just pick a color similar to what the pattern calls for my blocks. I'm not crazy about pink so I usually use a mauve color, etc. The last 2 quilts done from this same site a lot of people used other colors completely different and they turned out so pretty. Just please show us your blocks we all love to see them. .

ladyinpurple135 09-25-2017 04:46 PM

LetWellman - I know exactly where you are in SC. I totaled my sweet Acura RSX Type S on i85 almost 5 years ago right about there!!!! Anyway, it's cool to find someone close. A visit together would be fun - maybe lunch? I live about 30 miles or so up I77 from Charlotte. One of these days maybe I'll even get this project started!!!!!

Sorry for messing up your screen name letawellman - sometimes my fingers just do strange things.

Oh, it's so cute to read the chat here. I fell behind on the R&R, and I ought to get back to it before I start something new. I like the look of this pattern better than the R&R. I like the R&R name better than Autumn Evenings though. lolol

Hi Leta,
If you joined after a Monday, you will need to write to Debbie and ask her to send you the email for that week. She sends them out early on Monday mornings and will not automatically 'catch you up'. You have to ask.

This block is sweet, Mary. And thanks for that info on the dimensions.

Mary I used some questionable civil war prints for my neutral ones using some scrap pieces that were given to me. Beautiful block #2.

I did the summer sew along in 30's prints and it turned out Great.

I think anything you use will be good. Use what you have this pattern is good for using scraps and odds and ends up.

Ok here is my block #2 had some issues but it I'd good enough for me now. Also finished alternate blocks as well.

All of your blocks are so nice. I haven't started making the blocks yet as I have one more block from the first BOW. This is really a fun BOW to do. Sometimes life gets in the way and I get really behind but hope to catch up soon but sure do enjoy see everyone's pretty blocks.

sewbizgirl 09-26-2017 12:41 PM

Lots of great new pictures today, for inspiration! Loved seeing some alternate blocks too.

frustratedquilter40 09-26-2017 01:40 PM

Battleboro Axe love this line of fabric your quilt is going to be beautiful!

lawsonmugs 09-26-2017 03:21 PM

I love those alter. blocks.

# 1 and #2. Just picked up my kitty from the vet. She has been peeing on one bed. It better not be behavioral. Hopefully some that can be fixed with meds.
This kitty is the avatar.

sewbizgirl 09-27-2017 11:32 AM

Marcia, I just took my cat to the vet yesterday and am now treating a UTI she has. She also got subcutaneous fluids to flush out her kidneys, to help with kidney probs of age. The tests, exam, meds and her new flea medicine... $361.99!!! Hope you came out better than we did, Marcia! And I have to give her antibiotics in liquid form every day for 20 days! Pets! But we love them...

You can keep her off that bed by putting something 'crinkly' on top of it, then covering with a light sheet. When she jumps up on it she will hear the crinkling and jump off. Most cats don't like that sound. I use a big plastic wrap from a roll of batting, and my cat won't go on the bed.

Very pretty blocks!

Jaiade 09-27-2017 02:11 PM

I really like the blocks so far. Did any one/everyone make up the bags for each block?

lawsonmugs 09-27-2017 04:37 PM

I just pick out the fabrics as the blocks are sent to us and cut them out. But I am not using the civil war fabrics.

Bags? Do tell....

lawsonmugs 09-27-2017 04:42 PM

When Debbie gives the fabric list at the beginning she says cut the fabric to size and then place in bags and mark the bag. I think that is what Jaiade is asking about.

Ooohhh.... I guess you can see I don't read the directions much!

happylab 09-27-2017 05:10 PM

Such pretty blocks made already. I have my fabric selected, except for 6 of the background fabrics. Washed and ironed. I decided to do this in batiks of like colors of this pattern. I'm curious how it will turn out. I would post pics, but having issues with i-pad pics after I updated all my apps last week. Also having issues printing out pics from i-pad as well. So frustrating. Anyway I will be following along starting later this week. I'll post pics when I can.

lawsonmugs 09-28-2017 10:20 AM

Oh I bet the batiks will look so pretty. Hope you can post pictures.

sewbizgirl 09-28-2017 11:04 AM

I will love seeing the batiks, too, happylab!

Jaiade 09-28-2017 03:31 PM

Mary is right. The directions were for cutting for each block and placing in its own ziploc bag.

Happylab, I have also considered batiks. My concern would be getting enough contrast between light/dark without going to the store for more light batiks. I do know I better decide SOMETHING soon before I'm too far behind to catch up!

Battle Axe 09-29-2017 02:31 AM

I'm just cutting mine as I go.

Once upon a time, there was this nice looking lady that was in our group. The instructor would hand out the directions and of course this "nice lady" would change it so much that her participation was questionable.

I think I have morphed into "that lady." Maybe it is the age. I just need to do things differently or I feel like paddling against the current.

That being said...I am surprised when mine turns out to look much like yours. Thanks for listening to me and including me in the group.

Marcia
