I've been shopping at the $ store lately to save a little money. One item that I always pick up is canned mackerel. I've found that you can substitute it for canned tuna, which is much more expensive and may have a higher mercury content. (I also have tried to find out how the mackerel is fished, but that's been hard to figure out.) Mackerel is high in Omega-3s and the type that I buy is not packed in cottonseed oil, but water instead.
I'm on the hunt for some good recipes that feature mackerel, or tuna. I already use it for mackerel salad sandwiches, but I'm thinking maybe some tapas recipes would be fun. Got any ideas?

I have substituted tuna for salmon in baked salmon patties and they turned out well. One does have to up the seasoning because tuna is quite bland. I would think you could do the same sort of thing with mackerel. We like ours with homemade guac or tartar sauce.
And there's always old fashioned salmon pie and salmon and corn pie. I've used mackerel in that. Kids were not fans but I thought it tasted ok.

We fished for King Mackerel a lot. I was the Bubba Gump of Kingfish. Never had canned, only fresh. I would Scampi cubes, fried filets, and, of course, gumbo. But the best part was trolling for them!

Thanks...I tried making some mackerel patties for burgers yesterday. I think that I got it too moist. They fell apart and were still mushy inside. They still tasted good though. Back to the drawing board on that recipe.

I cooked up some fresh, whole mackerel the other day. I seasoned each fish, inside and out with a little smoked salt, garlic powder, a squeeze of lime, a dash of pepper, then put it in a hot cast iron frying pan with a little olive oil. I browned both sides until dark and crispy. OMG! it was so delicious! I just put the plate on the table and the DH and I took chunks of it off and dipped it in some cocktail sauce and a few drops of chili oil. I still have some left that I'm going to make fish tacos with.
