I do like deviled eggs - but I think they are a bother to make.

I think it is so interesting what comes under the "salad" umbrella!

one of my favorites is Apple salad.

apples diced
grapes sliced in half
pecans halves or chopped
mini marshmallows
mayo or cool whip added to cover the ingredients

My mom used to make this all the time back in the 60s when I was growing up.

I prefer the mayo but not everyone does. I've had it both ways.

Rhonda that sounds like a very good salad but I for one can not deal with mayo in/on fruits. Maybe only one fruit, a banana and peanut butter sandwich, loved those as a kid. Nice it has the option of cool whip I would use whipped cream.

Most of the jello salads are made with or served with mayo.

Those that will take desserts will make the gooey super sweet type things, those are always at our church meals.

Why not just a basic green salad. I know I ate them growing up. If you eat healthy, then fix what you eat.

as I have never had or seen or heard of a jello salad made with or served with mayo.

Yes, I am taking something I like and it is my new favorite--broccoli salad. Always have broccoli or cauliflower in the frig.
My vintage books have 'garden' salads and a few jello ones. The books have a lot of dressing recipes and my church cookbooks state Miracle Whip in their broccoli dressings.

QuiltE, It was not a big thing in my small farming community, we tend to favor foods we grew up eating. I live 8 miles from where I grew up and we ate mayo in potato/pasta salads and lots on sandwiches. If Jello was served, with bananas and topped whipped cream, that would have been for a holiday meal.

Much the same for me ... raised in a farming community and stayed close to home after marriage.
Like you, mayo was in potato salad, but in my case it was a homemade salad dressing, not at all like today's store-bought mayo. Jello salads just did not make it into the day-to-day three-squares of a farm family, but definitely were part of company meals .... or when we went to community/family/church events.

However, no, they were never made with mayo in them or served with .... nor do I recall seeing any recipes as such.

For us, red Jello (strawberry. raspberry, or cherry flavored) was dessert -

If made with canned fruit cocktail, sliced bananas, AND topped with real whipped cream - it was "fancy fare"

Living in a farming community was/is good for us. A holiday meal gave us something else to look forward to, jello/bananas/whipped cream.

Not in my world. We rarely used mayo in our jello salads. Mostly it was jello and fruit. There was one with Cool Whip and one with cottage cheese, but no mayo in jello salad here.
