I think the thread for hand quilting is right twist and for machine work it is left. It does make a difference but not that much I'd be concerned.

You get the mottled effect by scrunching up the fabric, put it in a tight container and cover it with the dye.
Just one word of caution about dying - never use the container for food again!

How about teaching them how they died fabric in colonial times? Onion skins, beets, spinach, etc. were used to dye fabrics back then.

Just wanted to remind everyone never to use polyester batting in a child's quilt. It is a fire hazard because it melts and sticks to the skin.
The ultimate batting is silk, but it is very pricy....
