I have a couple of those - they were advertised...
I have a couple of those - they were advertised for cutting coupons from newspapers or magazines. They do work well as seam rippers.

Many old machines have cloth around them as in the pic - always handy, though they do scratch the machine, another thing often seen on old machines - (the scratches in that area I mean). :)
