I belong to a small quilting group and we all have small Brother machines, I have the CS6000, some have other models. I bought mine online and most of the ladies bought theirs at Wal-Mart. They work great, I'm on my second one because I gave my first one to my granddaughter to make to college.

I had one and it was a decent little machine, just too small for me. I gave it to my niece and nephew for them to learn how to sew on.

They used (and abused) it for a couple years before they finally killed it. Now it gets an error after about 5 minutes of sewing; if they turn it off and back on they get another 5 minutes or so before it dies again.

So....that's sort of a mixed review, but they really did abuse that machine - I know for a fact they sewed cardboard with it at one point. It's just disappointing that the error is a computer error, the mechanicals of the machine still seem fine. If the machine didn't have a 'brain', I betcha it'd still be working fine.

I bought the CS6000i about 12 years ago. I bought it for the same reason you did. My Janome 10000 was just too heavy and expensive to lug to classes. I love this brother. My daughter liked mine so well she bought one
It's a great little machine for the price.

It is a really great machine for piecing, appliqué and general sewing. I've had mine for years with no issues. Biggest limitations are heavy duty sewing with lots of layers and throat space, but if you are not wanting to quilt large items I recommend it. Easy to use when traveling.

Thank you to all who replied! Such good advice. I have purchased the CS6000i and am very happy with it so far. Now was the time to buy one with the Christmas sales and free shipping!
