I'd like to give an opinion from personal experience. As an author of 5 published books I am quite aware of copyright laws, and it may surprise you to know that a lot of authors are not against having their books bought then shared, sold and resold through used bookstores or garage sales. Many of us believe it broadens our ability to reach new readers and it actually does happen, a lot. Once you have a devoted following, they would prefer to buy your next book new! (and signed) They will watch for new releases and hang onto that book. So in our opinion, as long as they do not copy it for resale use, then we have no problem... but that's just the opinion of a lot of my author-friends and :-D

An easy solution since you're using the light table at her place of work would be to buy another pattern and make it a gift to her for her help in the tracing.

Myself if my friend let me use her table light then it wouldn't bother me to let her use my pattern. If it were me I would feel selfish. You aren't copying it just letting her use it. But then that is just me.And it is your decision and you did ask. ;-)

I have lent many books both quilting and non -quilting from my personal library.
I was going to say the exact same thing. Thank you. By copywrite laws you own that copy now. If you want to lend the pattern to her then do it.

When you go to garage sales or yard sales you find all kind of patterns for sale or giving them away what is the differents the designer is getting their share of cost of the pattern then just a idea

Yes. She thinks she is helping you so you should help her. By not using her light table she cannot copy it unless she asks you for it later! By then you could not have it anymore or whatever.

If you want to keep your friend, share with her, if you want to lose her don't share with her.
