not only do I not hide fabric, DH has been known to surprise me with unplanned trips to quilt shops, especially when we are on vacation. We went to Florida not long ago, arrived late in the evening and checked into our hotel. First thing in the morning, he drove us over to the LQS and said, take your time, have fun and I'll watch the kids.

I wonder how many articles in Popular Mechanics or Field and Stream are devoted to helping husbands "hide" their purchases from their wives

hide it?!! no ...wish all here could have seen my guy pushing the cart thru the lanes of fabulous fabric at Fabric Depot in Portland OR last sunday. pulling hangers of just the right color/print from the 50% off remnant rack, directing me in right direction for what he says is "the kinds of fabric you like" ..& he's almost always right. he does know me well! he even insisted on one beautiful soft floral that i was not sure of because of price, because "you don't have much in that color range". hide it? not from an enabler such as he!

Some of us have partners that are enablers, some of us have partners that are tolerators, and some of us have partners that are discouragers.

If you have an enabler/encourager, be grateful.

I just did a burn test on a piece of fabric I got in a scrap bag from the thrift store. He knows I buy fabric but he knows most of it is second hand. I went out to the living room and grabbed a set of tweezers and his lighter. I had a sliver of the fabric in my hand and was folding it to grab with the tweezers. He looked at me in all seriousness and said " You've started snorting fabric haven't you?" I laughed and told him "Yep. You are on to me!".

That is so darn funny! My husband has always been an enabler, he is the one that told me to go to the store and buy yardage for quilts instead of saving up scraps. I had never even thought of using yardage before that and he really started something. He too will help me find fabrics and just the right colors and just doesn't even bother to open my boxes that come in the mail knowing they are fabric and quilt goodies. Yes we are blessed. I have known friends that had to hide things because they were afraid of their husbands. So so sad, but I have seen it for many years. Although I meant this thread to be for fun, I know it can be hard for some people to read.

I don't have any more room to hide my fabric stash. The other day I told my husband that we should move into a 5 or 6 bedroom house, "What for?" he asked, and I said the 3 bedrooms will be for my fabric and sewing equipment.

I know this is a good natured thread, but there are some women who feel they have to hide their purchases from their husbands. I always feel sad for anyone who has to live that way.

My DH and I almost always did our shopping together: time together; we both ate the food and would help with the chore; he helped lift things. But before he passed away we did almost all things together. As for fabric shopping he would sometimes go with me, but if he didn't go he was always willing to look at what I bought. We both knew what our budget was and what we had to spend on things.
