I will definitely check this out.
I do shop for fabric at WM but they really make it difficult. There is no one around to help you at least 1/2 of the time. I have noticed that the shelves are getting bare. I guess I'll visit Walmart Monday to see what's on sale.

At two of the Houston, Texas stores...you might want to take a lunch...I have waited up to an hour waiting for someone to come cut for me....they call them to come...but that doesn't work...and heaven forbid anyone from another dept to help you..they look at you like you have two heads...Only waited that long one time cause Grandson had found some deer panel fabric and the camouflage to go with it...and I got it to make him a quilt..
By the time I get home, I forget that I need to call and report it to the manager...not that it would do any good..
They must know they are losing business....

It goes to show that a self serve retailer does not want to spend the $$ for the labor costs of a personal service department. Unless there is a continuous line at the cutting table, it is too expensive to have an associate just hanging out waiting for the next customer. Does not make good business sense. For any business.
Our Walmart brought the fabric dept back last year but it looks like the same fabric that they had before. Nothing new in regard to designs. Their notions aisle and craft area is very nice and they have patterns.
ladies, most full service quilt shops have clearance sale fabric areas. You can get some great fabric at deep discounts! I certainly understand that paying full retail for the latest designs does not make sense for charitable sewing but it can be done by shopping at the quilt shops. Sign up for their newsletters too. They tend to advertise sales esp. Around most holiday weekends and Super Bowl. just a thought
if you have a Ben Franklin, check to see if they nave a fabric dept.

We don't have a quilt shop close, so walmart is it. I carry my cell phone with me & if no one is there to cut material, I call the store & tell them someone needs help in the sewing department. Usually get help pretty quick : )

Our town has two outlets for fabric...Walmart and the LQS. If Walmart cuts out fabric here I will be shopping on line because I can't afford $12/yd fabrics, thought I love the shop and the customer service I get there. It's a minimum of 50 miles to the next quilt shop and they have no other fabric outlets. Good thing I have a great stash.

Mine also just put the fabric dept back in their store just in the last nine months. They always have fabrics on clearance though. I go all the time to get a yard here and a yard there. The quality is not the greatest but for scrappy quilts it works just fine.

Totally agree with the lack of service in the several WalMarts that I can visit. My big complaint that has probably led to the decline in their fabric sales--they need a quilter to do their buying. They have lots of "focus fabrics" but have taken out too many of their blenders, white on white, ecru on ecru and that sort of thing. They need someone buying and cutting that knows what we need and how to cut it! I recall one gal who used to work the dept who should have been on commission as she knew my likes and I always left with more than I had gone to find!
