After finding the center and quarters, as previously suggested, have you tried a thin line of glue along the edge to be sewn? It keeps things from stretching while you work.

You mentioned four borders, which is quite a bit of opportunity to stretch or wave. Just plain Elmer's white washable glue. I also use it to baste layers for quilting.

Please post pictures once you are done (or before you light the match). : )

Can you sew those 4 borders together, then sew onto top, mitering the corners?

Ditto. Across the middle and down the centre. Pin each end of the border to the ends of the sides and ease in the difference.

I would suggest this too--I did one of the free Jinny Beyers' quilts and the borders (think there were 4 or 5)totaled 12"---her directions had you sewing them together and mitering the corners--worked pretty darn well and no waving.
