Oh my!! I guess I'm just glad my stash isn't huge. I have it in a dresser and on a shelf in my sewing area. I certainly don't want to offend anyone but, you gals need to get sewing.... and reduce that pile. Just sayin..... isn't your stash for using? Go use it!!

Just like quiltstringz I have stored my fabric in Rubbermaid totes in my garage for many years. We have a small house and my sewing room is a space next to the water softener and the furnace. I do open the totes often to choose and remove fabrics add new pieces. I have stored both washed and new fabric without insects or rodents or fabric rot. I would encourage you to label the totes so you can find what you need. I store my fabrics by category, i.e. baby, guys, patriotic.

You might use a desiccant to control moisture or drill tiny holes up near the top of the bins to allow the fabric to breathe.. I have stored fabric for 17 years on my unheated back porch with no damage by drilling a few holes to allow the fabric to breathe.

In South Alabama I would NOT store my fabric in the garage as I'm sure it would get moldy out there in our very humid climate. (One especially damp summer I noticed the inside of the cabinet doors were a bit moldy.) If you are in an area that the humidity stays really low, it may be okay. Small holes in plastic boxes where it can breathe is probably a good idea as long as bugs don't get in. My biggest concern, if I stored fabric in an out of the way place like that, is keeping it organized enough that I will use it and not just forget about it because it is too hard to find what I want for a project.

I like this response. Do you have any idea how long it will take to use up all that stash? Sew it up and somehow gift or sell the quilts. We won't last forever, will we.

I have all the backing fabric hanging in the spare bathroom. I agree with nanna-up-north -- time to use it up! Course that takes longer than one thinks -- In the last 8 months I have used 45 yards of fabric from my stash and finished up 6 UFOs. None of it seems to have made a dent in the stuffed drawers!
