Bingo! Best idea
and my husband thinks so too. We will be cremated and a small quilt to cover the urn would be very nice.

I made my dad a musical quilt and he told me he was going to be buried with it. I told him it may cover your casket but it will not be put into the ground I would take it home with me.

Actually, when my mom passed away I placed a quilt she had recently admired on the lower half of the casket with flowers on top (but that's because she loved flowers) in the 'viewing room'.

At the grave side service we had the quilt draped on the entire casket. It really added a bright spot on a bitter-sweet winter's day.

I think it's a great idea! Flowers really are too expensive! However, the living plants she received went home with relatives and two of the day lily plants became a part of the permanent 'greenery' on each side of the pulpit.

A friend of mine died recently and quilts of all kinds were brought in and draped over the pews. I thought this was a neat final tribute to her.

Just a suggestion:
I worked at a small rural hospital. To re-purpose flowers not taken by the families when a loved one passes, the funeral director would ask the family if they would 'donate' them to the local hospitals and retirement homes. Then, the nurses or anyone with time, would take them apart and make bouquets for the patients. Seemed to brighten everybody's day!!

I like the idea. I would do it. It lasts much longer that flowers anyway.

We had a quilt covering my Mother's casket. It was a beautiful Log Cabin in pinks. She, my sister and I made it. I have it now! We had lots of positive comments. It was explained that my Mother was an avid, longtime quilter, even though everyone there knew it since they knew her.

I thought I was the only one with this thought. I have told my family to put a quilt over my coffin and donate money save from the flowers to the Cancer Council. Quilters must be of the same mind.

I have seen it a man had a quilt his wife made on her casket. He took it home with him before they buried her.
