Actually, when my mom passed away I placed a quilt she had recently admired on the lower half of the casket with flowers on top (but that's because she loved flowers) in the 'viewing room'.
At the grave side service we had the quilt draped on the entire casket. It really added a bright spot on a bitter-sweet winter's day.
I think it's a great idea! Flowers really are too expensive! However, the living plants she received went home with relatives and two of the day lily plants became a part of the permanent 'greenery' on each side of the pulpit.

Just a suggestion:
I worked at a small rural hospital. To re-purpose flowers not taken by the families when a loved one passes, the funeral director would ask the family if they would 'donate' them to the local hospitals and retirement homes. Then, the nurses or anyone with time, would take them apart and make bouquets for the patients. Seemed to brighten everybody's day!!

We had a quilt covering my Mother's casket. It was a beautiful Log Cabin in pinks. She, my sister and I made it. I have it now! We had lots of positive comments. It was explained that my Mother was an avid, longtime quilter, even though everyone there knew it since they knew her.

Has anyone else thought about doing this??? I know we don't like to think about death, but it is coming to all of us.
