Danger of microwave bowls and baked potato bags

Many of the baked potato bags started fires in microwaves ------ because the fabric and/or batting and thread was not 100% cotton ------- that is what is needed to be safe. Batting is available specifically for microwave use ---- 100% cotton is a MUST!

I already have warm n' natural that is 100% cotton for using in microwaves.

My understanding of these bowl potholders is for protecting our hands when 'heating' something up, not cooking. I have some bowls that I use for a minute in the micro and man, they are hot-hot when you go to grab the bowl.

BTW, great discussion on this topic. We always want to be safe with gifts of love we make for others.

The above is the name of the batting used for microwave projects. If you read the fiber contents on Warm and Natural you will see that it is not 100% cotton even thought it is considered cotton batting. I have heard many horror stories about fires in microwaves using Warm and Natural. I wouldn't chance ruining my microwave - a lot more costly than a package of batting!

I just don't nuke them with anything that is over 3 minutes. A friend made me mine.

Yes Joann's does carry batting for longer time in the microwave. I bought the batting to use for microwave baked potatoes. It is wonderful. I leave it in for one potato for 5 min.

I like this method it seems to be more organized for the size portion. Having made several using another method, even with marking the darts they didnt always comevout even.

DH and I microwave our bare potatoes for 8 minutes (turning over once after 4 minutes) and then let them set for a few minutes before cutting them open. My sweet potatoes come out perfect this way also. They come out perfect. I have heard of people wrapping them with a paper towel also.
