I turn the power off at the wall and pull the plug out of all my electronic items, TV, hard drive recorder, stereo system, PC and all the sewing machines.

Nope, I do the same thing.
In fact, I unplug it all before I go to bed each night because we get thunderstorms at night sometimes.
I'd rather unplug than have to buy new ones.

I always unplug my machines when I'm not using them. I unplug the part that goes into the machine and I make sure it's not right up next to the machine. I don't unplug the other end from the power strip but the power strip is shut off if I'm not using it. I can probably manage to replace the cord if I have to. Not my machine though.

You unplug all of that? So you can't set your recorder to record something in advance? I have weekly programs set to record and sometimes will record something late at night or in the am before I get up. If I unplug it for very long, it'll lose all my settings.

If you haven't got a surge protector you are unwise to leave or have anything plugged in - especially in a storm.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but I record some programs if I can't watch them. I don't set it for recording in advance. And I only disconnect if there is a storm about, which doesn't happen often here where I live in Queensland. But I always pull the plugs from my machines after I have finished sewing. They are too costly to have to replace!!
