My favorite boys quilt is just cutting up old blue jeans into squares (5 or 6") Then add in some cotton fabric a theme that interest the young man - like sports, Nascar, tools, camo, etc. I just sew random squares together, it is also an easy quilt to just tie off - rather than quit the top.

I would try to find fabric that matches what he is interested in - race cars, bugs, (OK I'm drawing a blank here), but Warm Wishes makes a great quilt, simple and easy to stitch and it looks great when finished.

Kids that age will still enjoy "I Spy" quilts, with fabrics chosen to appeal to his interests. You can do pairs of fabrics and make it a "matching" game. They have a lot of fun looking at all the stuff on each square.

One of my nephews is 15. He has a bulldog he dearly loves. I got two panels with bulldogs on them and I am adding 6" squares around them with dog fabrics.
Another nephew likes anything that goes so his quilt will have squares with all types of transportation fabrics.
My DGS likes football, basketball and golf so his I Spy type quilt will have fabric squares with these sports.

Does he have a favorite sports team? If so, you could do a 2 or 3 color quilt featuring his team's colors, and then perhaps an accent fabric with some of the actual team sport logos. Or, if you can't find that, you may be able to get a local embroidery company to embroider the fabric - perhaps on a jean material - that you can also embed into the quilt. I think the mckwilter example is a perfect design, too. Thanks for sharing!

Any Plaid fabric ( or a bunch of Plaids ) and solid colors to match in big Blocks ( 12 inch blocks + Sashing) would be good for a boys quilt... could be quilted in Stripes, on the Diagonal, quilted in the Squares with Quilting every 2 inches in. or in Zig Zag pattern, or could be quilted in Shapes like Trucks, Blocks, Fish, Dogs etc... If He likes Camo Then you could Quilt it with Cabins, deer, bears, Fish, Moose, canoes, jeeps etc... I think the all over patterns with curves are more feminine.... of course if the boy is in to Sports then you could quilt in Shapes like basket balls, Baseballs, Footballs , Goal Posts, soccer or Volley balls... tennis Shoes ( like Converse etc ) use your imagination to make the Quilting bigger and not so tiny.... I saw a quilt that was about horses-the quilting was done so you could see horses, saddles, horse shoe shapes, Stirrup Shapes and The Lasso ... all around and all over the Quilt.... quilting doesn't always have to be straight lines or girly curves....
