What is cheating about it. I have a quilt I made from a panel that no one knows. It was from many years ago and was a sampler, I cut it up and hand quilted around each design in a panel. I came out great, looks like I hand appliqued and even my friends didn't know the difference until one of them said I have a panel like that, I reminder her we bought it together.

I don't consider any quilt as a cheater quilt. Even if it is a printed one, you spend your time quilting and binding it, Some people are just thoughtless. Any type of quilt is usually made with love and that is what counts.

Yes, a cheater is as you described and a panel is a panel. Also printed (usually with a theme, ie. a barn scene for kids,etc.) but not to look like a pieced quilt. Did this person say this in a tone that was negative. Pehaps she did not mean to be rude but needs to be enlightened about the difference??

If you buy a prequilted panel, and just add binding, I might consider that a “cheater quilt” but does it really matter if you call it a quilt? It is yours, and only subject to your opinion, unless you enter it in a quilt show. Otherwise, keep playing with fabric and ignore the QP.

I have seen some beautiful quilts made around panels and am making one now for my DD. Some people should keep their idea about quilting to themselves. What ever you make that makes you happy is your business and no one else's.

I think that person is rude. If you 'put' it together, hand pieced 2" blocks together or picked the cotton and made the fabric - IT DOESN'T MATTER - you made a quilt. I am thrilled when a person has put 2 pieces of fabric together and made a placemat and thrilled when they have hand sewn a quilt. That person has taken their time and created something. The level of experience, skills, detail is always different, but, their work should always be appreciated. Not to say a person can not offer guidance, tips or constructive criticism - but it does not have to be mean. And, BTW - one of my daughter's favorite 'quilts' was a baby quilt I made for her 33 years ago. It is a panel of a unicorn frolicing in the hills under a rainbow. I echo stitched the various things and double bordered it. She took it with her to college!

The panel quilts are also a great way to practice custom quilting without screwing up a hugely pieced quilt as badly. I have several panels I need to get busy on. Ignore the comments; there are some stunning panels out there.
