I'm sooo jealous. I would love to find one of these beauties to add to my sewing room. But ebay prices I can't afford. :(

10's of thousands were made. One will turn up near you at a good price sooner or later. Narrow your eBay search to local pick-up in your area, and the price will usually not be has high because the potential number of buyers is much fewer, but also watch Craigslist and other local ads. Best wishes.

Sharon, I personally use both of them. The DVD is great but sometimes I just like to see something in writing.
Thanks for your answering back :) I will have to save to get them both!! I would certainly like to be able to tinker with my two and get them running the best they can :) One needs a tension fix... the actual tension knob!
That book helped me to get my Daisy all pretty again. It would have saved me the $88 I paid to the shop just to have them 'service it', which amounted to replacing a belt and the light bulb. Never again! The book was fantastic - I can't believe I actually took the motor off my FW, took the finish down to the paint, patched up paint where it was needed, refinished and put it back together (and it runs!) My husband was even impressed with how good the book was. From now on out, I'll be just using it to keep her humming! (And away from the shop!)

To answer the other question about the final finish - I am going to be rechecking Billy's tuts on refinishing old machines to refresh my mind on what I need to get - I think its carnuba.
I asked Billy - he said to use pure carnuba and not to use anything like a cleaner wax because it will take off the decals.

I have been an avid proponent of the 301's and have accumulated 8 of them. I had seen a fw that someone had in a class I took and didn't really think too much of it. I did take the time to read and learn about them, especially since they are closely related and many parts work on either model. In my travels, I paid attention to look for them. You know how you can walk into a shop or yard sale and the vintage machines just leap into vision. I did post this story before, but I got my featherweight at the curb. I saw the case, I thought, and drove a bit further down the road (I live waaayy out in the country) so I could turn around safely. I drove back there (trying not to do 90 mph), and a man was putting more 'junk' out to the curb. Well I asked him about it and he said it doesn't work and hadn't been used for years and belonged to his aunt that passed away. Well I said even though it doesn't work I'd like to tinker with it. He said take it it was junk. The workings needed a good cleaning, oiling and greasing. I had it sewing withing minutes. It's not perfect, or pristine...no showroom finish on this girl-just like me. When she started to sew I promised her that from now on she would be cared for, used and appreciated.

I am glad you rescued her. She looks great. I think you get the best deals at garage sales since most people don't know what they are worth because they have been sitting in a closet not being used. Great job.

I just bought Featherweight #4 last week at an antique mall type store, its in fair condition. I cleaned and oiled it, this poor machine had more lint in it than I've seen in years of doing this for customers; it even had it around the inside of the hand wheel. I'm happy to report that after her spa treatment, she sews a beautiful stitch. "born" in 1950.
The paint is gone on the front edge as are the decals,so this tells me that she has sewn miles of fabric.
