Are you a "particular" buyer, when it comes to batiks?

Interesting question. While I can identify most fabrics by manufacturer, I cannot say that about batiks. And now that I know what "chop" means, I guess I have to say I lean toward them, as opposed to "solid" or "watercolored" batiks. Color is what draws me first...bright reds, yellows, oranges, lime greens. I have also noticed a lack of lighter,
background colors but did recently see a packet of lights all bundled together and I jumped on it like a june bug on a duck's back! So yeah, I think they would sell well. On the downside...I hate when I'm in a swap and folks use cheap, box store batiks. They are flimsy enough to read through and most time the back sides of the fabrics look like they are printed fabrics not batiks. And a last note, I am picky about my batik use because I will not mix batiks with other fabrics in a quilt top.

I buy for color and print. I have purchased mostly earth tones. Greens, browns, fall colors. I do have some blues too. Don't like the brights so much. But I don't buy a certain maker or designer. I just buy what I like.

I look for small geometric or botanical patterns, seldom buy watercolors or mottles and walk right past big-busy-multi-colored stuff. The fabric must feel solid on the bolt, not flimsy at all. Brand does not matter, but I find that 90% of what I buy is either Kaufman's, usually their Artisan Batiks, or Timeless Treasures Tonga.

I love almost anything by Hoffman. I don't set out to buy them, when I pick up the bolts I notice that they are Hoffmans. I buy others, too.
The tie dye look does not work for me. Neither do batiks with all colors splotched together. I like a batik with color flowing between 2 to 4 hues or shades. I like subtle patterns.
Most of the cheaply priced batiks, I do not like at all.

In general, I think I'm a pretty selective about buying fabrics and it has to do with the "hand" of a fabric. There are some with a smooth, weighty heft to them that you know will handle beautifully in a quilt. That quality matters every bit as much as the design or appearance of the fabric whether it's a batik or a print.

I like the softer blends of colors - and I agree that there aren't enough lighter shades at this time. My daughter will only buy the blended colors. She does not like the patterns, like fish or trees, etc. Hope this helps you.

Yes I'm choosy ... my favs are Hoffman, Island Batiks and Moda. Haven't bought the Connecting Threads ...
There's a BIG difference between true Indonesian batiks - and the "tie die" ones from India & Pakistan, that you see at Joanns or Walmart etc

Just like people don't like to buy them and pass over them when seen in a shop....hardly the same rush as a fabulously colored mottle, but just a little bit can make a quilt sparkle.
They should do some layer cakes or Bali Pops in just light batiks - but it would never sell because it wouldn't be visually appealing in the packaging.
Same for the really dark-darks - I always grab them (batiks or regular) when I see them because they, too, are hard to come across.
Do you think there would be a market for it?
