I aggree, you would better of buying a 1/4 0r 1/2 yard, then if it shrinks= runs you should have a useable piece of fabric to use! I wash everything that comes into my house, can no longer be sure where its been or where it came from!!!!!

What about quilt kits that say do not wash. Would you wash anyway?

I got yardage of Kona Cotton in red from Joann and didn't prewash (yes, you may call me a fool). That fabric runs as if it were in a marathon.

I was all reds and green; I found it is better to do that than take a chance on bleeding fabric. If it bleeds I do not use it at all; I take it back or find someone that does want it but with a warning-it bleeds.

I usually prewash, but ALWAYS with reds. They are notorious bleeders. Good luck!

I never prewash, however with any fabric that I think may be a bleeder, I always use a dye catcher when I wash the finished project. If its a large piece, I will cut a small square and test it in hot water and soap. I took a class on fabric with Harriet Hargrave years ago and is what she recommended. I have not had a problem. One reason she recommended not washing is that the coatings the fabrics apply during manufacturing help to protect the fabric. If you are person who only buys enough to do one project at a time, that may not be an issue, but I am a bigger fabric collector than cutter!

For block swaps that want washed blocks sent, I assemble them, then wash as she recommended.

    Default Red fat qtr

they place a do not wash fat qtrs on all their fat quarters....because of raveling. I doubt that they even thought about its color.
