I machine piece, except paper-piecing such as hexagons, hand-appliqué, and hand quilt. However, I recently bought a new machine with the intention of learning to machine quilt so that I can get more projects done. My sewing time is limited by full-time work and parenting, so to get anything done, I've got to speed up somewhere! However, I will never stop hand sewing until the Lord takes it away from me, it is so enjoyable. I wish I could hand sew in down time at work. We used to in the "old days". Now it's acceptable to surf the Internet but not do anything like sewing. I guess surfing the Internet looks like work.

I prefer to piece by hand, but...........................................when the hands get bad, you resort to machine quilting.

I can only match up squares and corners when hand piecing. My machine pieced tops have mismatched corners.

I love to hand quilt, but have been machine quilting lately just to get the projects finished (I do, however, use a treadle machine, if that counts!). I've recently had a desire to go back to hand quilting because of the reasons many others gave - the portability and the pure joy of it.

I just ordered a Barnett lap quilting frame (http://www.laptophoops.com/Original-Design-Frames.html) after reading a lot of good things about them. Previously I had a huge frame set up and felt isolated from the family. This seems like it'll work well for what I want it for - to be in the same room with my family AND still be able to quilt. The customer service of this company was awesome, btw.

I'm curious, anybody ever hand quilt a bargello quilt?? I'm going to be starting one soon, and I wonder if it's possible to hand quilt it because of all the seams. ANY input would be greatly appreciated.

I machine piece and do applique by hand. I have 3 applique projects two are needle turn and one is buttonhole stitch on wool.

I find my piecing is much more accurate when I hand piece. I must have a visual problem because my machine seams almost never are the same top and bottom of the seam - even on short seams! Hand stitching is also much more forgiving when making points meet and making a "short" side fit on a longer side.

30 years ago, that's all I did was hand piece and quilt. But in the last 1 1/2 I've joined the machine quilting group. But I must say, I did a much nicer job hand quilting than machine piecing. I want to be able to do it all. I don't have a machine that does the fancy stitches, just straight lines. So you just never know what I'm going to come up with because I do love all the feathery quilting and can't afford to send everything to a longarm.
