My granddad used to use the term 'baker's dozen'. He always made sure the crates of berries he sold had all the rims covered because '13 makes a baker's dozen' and he always wanted his customers to be happy with his product.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
You made your bed, now sleep in it.
Six of one, half a dozen of another.
And one another from my mom, an American of Germany ancestry, "Take a Dutchman for what he means and not what he says."

those are all good, I grew up hearing most of them. I work in a state facility where we care for adults with mental retardation and developemental disabilities and I am always saying " but by the grace of God, this isn't you or me" when refering to one of the residents. You learn alot about life from caring for them. it reminds us to give the care we would want for ourselves.

My sister told me one day when we were teenagers "don't write a check with your mouth that your body can't cash." I guess I should have been insulted but I busted up laughing-so did she.
My all time favorite is: "You're not the only toad in this puddle". My mother used to say that alot, usually followed by "young lady".
