My mother always used the backing as binding. In fact I didn't know there was any other way to bind a quilt until a few years ago. I think it is very easy, but on my next quilt I am going to use some binding out of extra fabric from one of my borders.

Clear to me and that's exactly how they do it. Kinda skip a step. Problem is it's hard enough to get the backing sandwiched perfectly to quilt, and you don't have a lot of room for give or error if you do it that way. I prefer to bind separately as it makes for a cleaner look (in my opinion, of course), even if you use the same fabric.

I did all mine that way to begin with, that was the way I learned. but since, I have done other types. It really is the easiest.

Thats how i do it. I only use this on "everyday quilts" though. I use a regular binding on nice quilts.

I sometimes use the same fabric for binding that I used for the backing, but cut the binding separately and sew it on. Looks great.

My InLaws who have been quilting (by hand) for ages always use this method for backing/binding.

Yes, cut the backing as big as you need for it to be self binding. Have done it many times. Wrpa it to the front and stitch.
