Default Thread Question

I am attempting to make my first bag with a zipper from a YouTube video. I bought a really stiff interfacing.
When I started quilting through the layers, my thread started fraying and breaking. My needle is the 110 size that I used to sew my jelly roll rug. Should I change needle? Get stronger thread? What kind of thread? Haven't heard of the threads mentioned here, only basic brands sold at walmart.

Anyway, I put it on the back burner till I get more info so that I don't get frustrated.
I know I'll get great advice, so thanks in advance!!

If you used the needle for your whole jelly roll rug I would definitely change the needle.Maybe try a topstitch needle. Good luck with your project.

The needle size is probably shredding the thread. There is a difference on the needle eyes.

Try a 90/14 topstitch needle with a 3.0 stitch length. We used these in our bag class which used the very thick bag batting. I used poly 40 embroidery thread to quilt the pieces and for sewing the bag together. Same thread in the bobbin to match the fabric on back. This is my go-to thread type for many projects and seldom have any issues. Try a spool or two to see if you like it.

Do you have a walking foot? It will help feed the layers through the machine.

I trim out the batting from the seam line to reduce bulk. Cut right outside the seam and not any of the stitches.

What type of straps are you making for bag? I also make them so there is no bulk in the seam lines. If you need help with them let us know.

I too would go to the 90/14 top stitch needle before trying new thread. If you have some scrap to play with check it out first and see how your thread holds up. On a bag I would go with a thread that is 100% polyester as it will most likely hold up a bit better than a blend on a bag. Do needle first and thread second. Walking foot is great! Hav fun making your bag.

I'd use that topstitch needle and also a poly thread not a cotton one.

It would help to know the type of thread you are using.....you need to match the thread size to the needle....too thick of thread with too small needle will result in fraying and also the opposite will too....the too thin thread will flop around in the scarf of the needle....I think a poly thread will work better than a cotton one.....
