Hi Mari
Here is the pattern and the dimensions of the Bow Tie:

attach 4 inch square to the 4 inch cut out to one side of the 6 1/2 in print square. Attach 4 inch square to other cut out space of print. Press seams away from square. Attach white 6 1/2 inch to printed Bow Tie on each side, matching corners. Press all seams toward white pieces.

This is the way the finished block should look.

I found a tutorial for a 3D bow tie block. It is at http://bearcreekquilter.wordpress.com The directions were easy to follow. {good pictures} You use 5 squares that are the same size and use only 3 seams. There is a search box on the page to put the name of the block in. I am making some with purple fabric. They are cute, sorry but my camera quit working.

Could not find the 3d bow tie block instructions. Had a bunch of triangles on background fabric and quilted on.

I went there today. You look down the page on the right side and you will find a search box. Put in '3D bow tie' and click the arrow. It brings up '3D bow tie tutorial and more' as your search result. Click that link and it takes you to the tutorial. I just checked again to be sure.

Are you using a method like in the link above, except different colors in squares that are across from each other and different measurements so the center tie is proportionally smaller?

Make sure the seams are pressed good. Use a little spray starch if necessary, then either make a wreath or sew them together block to block or use sashing. Anyway is easy and lovely. I am making mine all red wreath with a medallion in the middle of the wreath. Love this pattern. It can be used so many ways. Just experiment.
