I don't know what it would be called. My Mother made these many years ago and my sister is wanting a new set.

Does anyone know where an easy-to-follow tutorial could be found?

Try the fons and porter site, they had a show just the other day with triangles. Those are equilateral, with inside angles of 60 degrees, so you just set them in rows of 5,6, and 5.

Personally I would say "who needs a pattern!" just use the original as your pattern, if you feel you need more to go by, photo copy the placemat, then cut out the triangle, add a quarter inch seam allowance and you will have the size you need, viola new template! Have fun making them, I would love to see what you make.

I had thought about that ~ I've never sewn triangles before but there is always 1st time for everything! I will do that if no tutorial or link is found.

I would use the english paper piecing method, much more accurate if you are unsure of stitching with seams

Just cut out enough papers the 'finished' size of triangles, cut fabric with roughly 1/4 seam allowance, tack over papers, then overstitch two sides together, carry on adding triangles until you have the size and layoutyou want, remove papers then layer up and quilt as usual :D

Could always do half-square triangles by sewing 1/4 inch from a diagonal line, cut on the line and then add a larger piece where the triangle goes and trim to the correct shape. It's a cute placemat.

If you starch your fabrics well before cutting, it will keep those bias edges from stretching. You still need to handle them carefully while stitching and pressing, but it really does help :D:D:D

Cut equilateral triangles. Sew them into strip and then sew the strips together. Very cute by the way! I used one of those triangle cutting rulers but you can use templates or a regular rulers with 60 degree lines too.

I have the correct size equal lateral triangles cut but when I put them together, the center is puckering up where all of the stitching comes together.
