I Googled this about 10 days ago as I had no idea what they were talking about when the phrase "birthing a quilt" was used.

I tried for a full-size quilt, and failed miserably. Somehow there was a discrepancy between my top, my batting and my backing and didn't realize it til wayyyyyy too late. had to undo the whole thing and do it the other way. Fortunately I was only tying it. but that was a lot of ties to snip

I saw a hint the other day on birthing that some might like.
At each side of the opening, sew all three fabrics together PERPENDICULAR from your seam to the edge of the opening. This will automatically make it MUCH easier in closing the gap as it will fold in your edges for you. I hope you can picture that.
