Two small children in 2 separate schools were hit indirectly by lightning when it hit the building & traveled through to a light switch and another by the child touching a door know. We don't always teach the kids how to be safe indoors in these severe electrical storms. I can imagine the fear these two small children will have of storms in the future.

OMG how scary for them. My much older than that daughter had that happen when lightning struck her building as she was opening an outside door. This was about 4 months ago, doc had her come back for 3 follow up visits aft the initial blood work, ekg, etc. It can affect the body in many ways for some time. She is still very squemish during storms.

When I was about 10 I watched my mother get struck by lightning. My dad and I were sitting at the kitchen table talking with mom. She was standing at the stove stirring some homemade tapiocca pudding. Our front door was open but the screen door was closed. Lightning came through the screen door went through her hand and out her leg and back out the door; we thank God she was standing on a rubber mat (helps your back when standing long times). The spoon went flying through the air, burned her hand, the pot and tapiocca. She was shocked but okay. Memories I shall never forget and we never leave a door open during a lightning storm.

Don't lightning rods help prevent something like this? My kids think I am weird because I make them turn off the computer, the tv, and make sure they don't take a bath or shower during an electrical storm. Luckily we don't have as many here in the Seattle area as we did in Alabama where I grew up.

Lightning rods do not always work. That lightning that came through our screen door was only two feet away from the grounding rod for the house.
