Hello, I have been reading through posts here about bearding of the batting. I am wondering if any of you have ever heard of bearding or batting migrating to the top of quilts where there has not been any stitching. I had a customer call me this week to tell me that the batting was bearding or she called it pilling on the top, and sent me pictures. I have never had this problem in all my years of Quilting and I have used this same batting for many years (although this is a new roll of batting.) But the funny thing is that the the white spots of batting shown in the pictures are not anywhere near my stitching, so it could not have been caused from my needle. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes. If a batting is going to beard it is going to do it over the entire quilt top not just where the needle holes are. The fibers of the batting are migrating up between the warp and weft threads of the fabric.

It used to be that poly and wool had the worst reputations for bearding. But new processes, bonding and needle punching mitigates that and very few battings on the market are prone to it but some are. Quilters Dream Wool is one of them. QD addressed the issue and wrote a blog about it saying some of the sulfer based dyes in today's fabrics causing the issue. Here is a link to the blog. Feline Fanatic, thank you. This is not the brand of batting I used, but the colors mentioned, dark blue and dark red, are where the batting is bearding. I will share this with my customer. Makes me feel better, it was a combination of things that caused it, not just my choice of batting.

I would see if the white bits on top of the quilt where from pilling after being washed with other things.

Quilters Dream cotton batting (no scrim) suggests not using 100% cotton thread because the action of the thread pulling through the batting can cause it to pull the batting to the top and bottom of the quilt.

I am in the process of hand quilting a king sized quilt that I chose Quilter's Dream Wool for batting. It is bearding all over the surface of the quilt top. Hoping that it stops when I finish quilting and wash it??

I have QD wool in the king quilt on my bed. I've never had a problem with it, in fact it's my favorite batting.

I had this happen on a dark quilt , but I found that I had put the batting upside down . There is a difference in the look and feel of the batting. Did seem to happen when it is used the other way

It came through broadcloth I used in places on a quilt. I am wiser now.
