I have finished this little topper from the Red Button Quilt Company. It came with the most adorable snowman buttons that were to be sewn on like a hanging ornament. There is a problem however, I went to sew on these buttons (there are 12 - 3 each side) and they stand proud of the quilt and do not lay flat - or even close. The shank on the button is way to long.

So here are the options that I have kicked around.....

1 - Cut off the shank and glue them on (anyone done this?)

2- Make a small button hole and put the shank into it and sew the button to the back of the quilt (actually tried this on a scrap I trimmed off the edge of another quilt. Might work...)

3- OR .... Get some other ideas from you wonderful ladies!!

That is actually my first thought but what would you use for glue?

Will this item be washed?

Could you hand embroider the little faces on the topper?

It might at one point need to be laundered - but could easily be hand washed as it is only 18x18. While I could hand embroider something I would love to use the buttons.

I think I would give option 2 a try. It is more work now, but will not come off.
In cutting off the shank you could brake the button.

If the buttons are supposed to be ornaments hanging from the boughs I would use either embroidery floss or maybe Valdani in a loop and let them hang freely. Then use it as a wallhanging. I just looked at your pic again. I think I would have sewn them on as I was doing the embroidery. It will be cute as the dickens.

I too like this idea. Since they are suppose to be ornaments, sewing the shank near the boughs would make sense to me thereby making them 3-D. They could be touched and tapped to move just like real ornaments would. Just my opinion on how I would do it but maybe in real life they don't look as good sitting too far out from the quilt so you have to do what you feel looks right. Those buttons are really so darn cute and what lovely work you did on this piece!
