To me a hobby is not just collecting a certain item but also a way of doing something you enjoy doing such as, hiking, woodworking, hunting, sewing, quilting. So yes quilting is one of my hobbies, reading is another hobby, playing with grandchildren. A hobby is something you enjoy doing and a few people are able to do this in their job. So their hobby is their job.

I don't know if I consider myself a true 'quilter', but I REALLY hate hemming! People think just because you know how to run a sewing machine you can do anything on it. I am definitely more of a 'hobbyist'. This response made me laugh!

Yes I do, it really passes a lot of time for me or anyone who lives alone.

It is my therapy and I have a fabric obsession. The word hobby doesn't really bother me but like someone else said the word "craft" does for some reason.

I am actually thrilled to call quilting my hobby. For years I had no hobbies at all (no spare time) so when I say it is my hobby it makes me proud that I have found some time for myself, and have found something I love doing in that time, sometimes even finishing something useful and/or beautiful!

As an aside, I dislike the trend of giving big names to occupations/activities. So what would drive me mad would be to be called 'an independent not for profit textile artist' or some such wordy muddle! Let's call a spade a spade. I like to cut up fabric and play with it. Its not that complicated!
