I was sewing along yesterday (barefoot), and I noticed that my foot pedal was getting warm. Is this normal?

It might be the warmth from your barefoot that's contributing to it.. see what happens to the pedal when you have a shoe/sneaker etc. on your foot..

I thought of that, but it was warmer than my foot. I generally have socks on or slippers, so I've never noticed before if it heated up. It's an older sewing machine, Singer Merritt 4525, but it runs smoothly.

I almost always sew barefoot, even at retreats and workshops. My foot pedals do not heat up on any of my machines, from a 30 year old Kenmore to last year's Janome.

I would check and see if the card is heating up too. That could lead to a dangerous situation.

Don't take chances. Get it replaced npw before it shocks you or starts a fire.
