I learnt on electric at school but I lived with my grandmother who had a treadle machine - well twice I managed to put the needle through my thumb using the treadle machine. I think I was a lot fitter back in those days and always in a hurry (at the age of 13 and wanting to go surfing all weekend)

I learned on my grandma's treadle. Sadly, there are no photos of it among the hundreds. I think it was so relaxing moving back and forth and hearing the hum of the machine. I guess we didn't think it important to take a photo of something so utilitarian. I now take a photo of me at any machine I've made something on -- there's usually a story about the machine and the project!

First sewing project was using a treadle about 1961 when I was 8 yrs old - made an apron for 4-H (got a blue ribbon).

My Mother taught me to sew on her treadle machine when I was 8 years old. She traded it in on an electric machine in 1963. I was heart broken!

I learned to sew from my Gram on her treadle machine. My first projects were clothes for my cats, I didn't play with dolls. My cats were well dressed and would allow me to play for about half hour a day with them when I was a little girl.

I learned to sew when I was in Home Ec. My paternal grandmother had a treadle and she would use it to do sewing and mending. When she passed, my older sister got it. She has never sewed or quilted in her life!! Does this seem fair!! It's used for storing mail and I don't know what all on the top of it! My mother never sewed, but she said that the treadle wood is starting to crack because it sits right next to her double doors and gets sun exposure.

My Grandfather taught me to sew on his treadle. My gram couldn't even sew a button on - but boy could she cook and bake. They were a great team!
