I made this heart wedding quilt for my nephew and his bride last fall.

I like to check their wedding registry for colors and then make a lap quilt based on those colors and the design on the interests they have. For one couple that choose several of the bright colors of FiestaWare for dishes representing Africa where they met in the Peace Corp, I choose an improv pieced lap quilt with those colors and a neutral. Made it large enough for lap quilt or large table topper or wallhanging--figured they could do what they wished. For another that lived on West Coast near beach and met at the beach, I made a landscape type quilt with batiks representing beach, water, skyline with gradually setting sun. Since the groom's Mom said they basically had no color in their house due to hand-me-down furniture, I went with colors true to beach.

I haven't made a quilt for a wedding myself but the lady that owns one of the quilt shops I usually go to was chatting about this one time when I went in. She says that she likes to make a Christmas quilt for the the couple getting married. This way, they don't get tired of it because it's only out for a short time each year.

I made the quilt "From this Moment On" for a dear couple in 2013. Their colors were shades of blue I love how it turned out and so did the bride and groom. I made the silhouette in black and embroidered their names and date.

A Christmas quilt is a great idea.

I did a white work as a wedding gift that was very well-received. Their are some nice ones out there that are already stamped on the fabric now.

I think a log cabin is always popular because non-quilting people see it as an easily recognized pattern.

If you do their "colours" be sure you know what their colours really are. Their idea of "purple" might be totally different from your idea of "purple". (Ask me how I know.)

I made the binding tool star quilt from Missouri Star for my son's wedding and they really liked it. I used a couple of matching jellyrolls for the stars. Was quick and very striking.

You are so right about colors!! My sil wanted me to make a tshirt quilt for her from old marathon shirts of hers and wanted dusty pink and green fabric in it! Not colors to complement most tshirts! I hated every minute working on that quilt cuz it was so ugly. She has enough shirts for another and IF I do it, I will use my own plan and surprise her with it.

This is a fabulous idea! I can see all sorts of different ways of doing it. Two exactly the same with their names on them, or with the same pattern and the same colors but reversed (if one has blue on silver, the other could be silver on blue, for example), or with the same pattern but in different colors, or the same colors and different patterns.

Now whether or not I can manage to complete two quilts … happy 10th anniversary kids!


Thanks to everyone who posted! I have no idea what I’m going to do, but now it’s because I have to sort through all the ideas, whereas before it was because I didn’t have any good ideas, putting me in a much better spot now. I’m leaning towards two quilts in the same colors either in different patterns or arranged differently, but until I find the fabrics, things tend to change as I go (because I can’t find that perfect green and then think maybe purple would work if I used yellow instead of brown, but then I’d have to change the gold to something else, and you’d think the black would look good, but it needs to be a brown black, not a blue black … and it goes on and on).
