YC Quilter

What machine would you recommend for a 9 year old to learn on? My LQS suggested a Juki HZL-70HW-A which seemed pretty good to me, but I’m not familiar with the Juki line. Any ideas or input would be appreciated, thanks!

Juki machines are good and I think that model would be a good starter machine.

I have Vikings, and my DGD was 9 when she made her first quilt. I had her use the D1, computerized machine, and I slowed the speed way down. I sew very fast, but she needed to learn control. I had her follow the lines on paper, then draw some shapes and follow those. She had fun and was eager to start on the quilt. By the end of a small lap quilt of 9" squares, she was bored! I wouldn't buy a machine for her until she has demonstrated that she will stick with it. I might turn over my featherweight one day, but she isn't interested now at 11!

juki's are great machines. just don't get any machine which advertises that it is for children... too light, too few features

Walmart has a pretty decent Brother machine for under $200. My girlfriend purchased one for her travel machine and loves it.

No matter what you end up with, the memories will far surpass whatever machine it is.

I still have my first machine (which was given to me by my mother when I was 13).
Let's just say that was a "few" years ago!

Brother CS6000i is a great starter machine. It is my take to class machine and I love it. Very affordable too.

My DGD usually was with me when I went to quilts shops. She was about 8 years old when she saw the Hello Kitty machine and her eyes lit up. I bought it for her right then. Easy and straight forward to use. She is 19 and still sewing with it. It's made by Janome and the same as the Janome Jem Gold. http://janome.com/en/machines/sewing/11706-hello-kitty/

I teach several children from 8 to 10 years - They just use my machines which is fine. What I find most valuable is something with speed control. Actually, like that feature for myself as well.

I agree with the Brother machines!! Lots to grow with but easy to use. And very affordable - I had one for years and only stepped up for a bigger throat and IDT on my Pfaff.
