Default Is Raw edge appliqué ok for baby quilt?

Is raw edge applique ok to use on a baby quilt? I use steam a seam 2 ( lite) and sew around the piece a few times.

    Thanks
    MJ

As long as you sew inside the shapes about 1/8 in so when the edges fray, the pieces stay secure.

IMHO, I just worry about loose threads. Always an issue with baby quilts.

Personally I'd avoid raw edge applique on baby quilts because of the threads, as Julie said. When the child is older (which happens very quickly!!) the potential for loose threads will matter a lot less, so I'd save the applique until then.

I understand folks concern for the threads but my concern takes a slightly different direction. Because a baby quilt will be washed more often simply because of use by a little one potentially the beautiful work of raw edge applique could potentially fray too much and become loose past that inner stitching. I agree with Panchita. I would suggest keeping your fine work for when the child is older or as part of a wall quilt to decorate the baby's room. .

If you satin-stitch or zigzag over the edges , it works just fine. No loose threads that way.

I hope so, I’ve been doing it for over 20; years, the baby quilts have held up and been loved for starting the third generation now

I made a beautiful raw-edge appliquéd quilt for my grandson. I thought I had secured the edges well. A couple of years later I saw the quilt. The baby's mom washed the quilt very frequently. Not only had it faded, but many of the appliqués had pulled apart. I would not do it again unless I knew the quilt would be used for decor, not for every day use.

Lois how did sew it down? Not that I’m sure I could do any better. I expect these quilts to be washed over and over.
