    Default Sashing Width?

I am planning a quilt with 6" blocks, and I would like to use sashing between the blocks. Is there any rule of thumb about how wide sashing should be?

No rule of thumb, anything up to about half the width of the block looks ok. I usually lay the blocks on the uncut piece of fabric I'm thinking about using for the sashing, keep adjusting then decide. Sometimes the print or color of the sashing dictates a wider or narrower cut.

For blocks that small, my choice would be 1 1/2 inches finished size.

I usually go by sashing large enough to go with my blocks but not overwhelm them. For 6 inch blocks, 3 inches would be my maximum and I might even do cornerstones and add the triangles to the 3 inch sashing ends to make the star blocks appear with the sashing.

That's generally what I do. Anything wider looks disproportionate to me.

I agree, I would go with 1 1/2" sashing too.

Often, any width that is an even division of the block size will look balanced (6" divides evenly by 1 1/2", 2", 3") odd divisions tend to look ( off) but sometimes work anyway. Lay out a block with different sashing widths & see what appeals to you.

If you go with the Golden Ratio, your sashing could be 1.5" or 2.25". I would probably go with the 1.5" if you are making a more traditional quilt. If you're making a modern quilt, you could make the sashing 3.75" or even make it wider than the block at 9.75" to give you plenty of blank space. It all just depends on the look you're going for (and of course, if you prefer some other measurement for your sashing, there's nothing wrong with that; art is all about innovation and experimentation! Go with what looks good to you).

I would use 2 1/2 inch strips or 1 1/2 inch strips. I don't know why but I favor the 2" finished strips.
