Just started quilting again after a hiatus of several years. I have a small stash and fabrics for planned projects, but I have very few solids. What is the best way to stock up? I've thought of going to the store and buying a half yard of 15-20 basics (pastels and brights), but that's pretty pricey. Bundles of fat quarters wouldn't cost much less though.

I was lucky ... I found a store that was going out of business and I was able to purchase a large amount of Kona solids for $3.00 or less (If I finished the bolt, and I often did, the first yard was $1.50). I was able to purchase about a dozen different colors, at least 2 yards of each, more if I finished the bolt (I looked for skinny bolts!).

So I would say keep your eyes open for sales, even if it's only a few colors on sale, and when you see the sales - stock as much as you can.

If you belong to a Guild maybe there would be an exchange of solids for prints. I am in short supply of neutrals and whites. As you visit a local quilt shop purchase a few fat quarters. Hugs and have fun building your stash !

I don't use a lot of solids, but I do keep an eye out for fabrics that read as a solid but have some movement in them as well. Mottled or just a small motif in a tone on tone colour is a great addition if you're looking to increase your fabric selection.

Browse through Marshall's Dry Goods. I have never bought from them online, but I have visited their store. I bought, if I remember correctly, over 40 yards of fabric and spent only about $120. DH plans road trips with quilt/fabric stores along the way - he's an enabler.

I looked in my stash after reading your post, and I don't have many solids either (who knew?!) I do have quite a few fabrics that read as solid. I just recently discovered Kona solids - boy are those colors yummy!! Also, I just got a catalog from Connecting Threads - they have solids starting at $4.96/yd and the have some nice colors. They also sell sampler packs - fat quarters, stack, strips, charms.

Kaufman has jelly roll solids with non-pinked straight edges now.

I wouldn't worry about stocking up - buy fabrics for the projects you want to do - the stash will build on its own!
