When making quilts with white, like the more modern ones now, or off white, like for 30-s quilts, what do you use?

In the past I made some quilts with Moda muslin but when I buy the same bolt now the fabric does not seem as thick and has many pieces of the cotton seed shell, little brown specks. Kona again is too thick for my liking to piece with.

I found that muslin is kind of thin, also. I usually try to find a white on white. I figure whites can't really change much through the years. At least not like colors and designs can.

To me the Kona snow looks like muslin in color, and is better fabric. It's around $5 a yard at MissouriQuilt.

I bought it thinking it would be white-white, but instead it is a yellowy-musliny color. It looks good with my floral feedsack type prints.

I am using Moda bleached muslin and Moda white with my 30's repros.

have you tried "Ecology Cloth" Is is a more refined muslin color fabric and better quality than muslin. Excellent for the repro type blocks. The name of it is Ecology Cloth.

The quilt I just finished has Robert Kaufman's Kona white in it. The Moda wasn't a bright white. I wonder if Kona comes in different whites.

I just shopped at JoAnn's with a coupon for muslin. Their premium "legacy" muslin seems to be good quality. There was quite a bit of variation in the different unbleached muslins; most seemed darker than what I wanted. Sometimes the tints are more to the yellow side than to the brown too.

I ended up getting some of the white "legacy". However, this brand came in different widths and I noticed variation in the shades of white among the different widths even within the same brand. This must be differences in dye lots.

Also found some Kona and other brands. Again, all of the unbleached muslins weren't quite the shade that I wanted. Most of the whites were too brilliantly white.

I use white on white and off white on off white. I just used bleached white muskin for a quilt back. Very nice white and thick, I bought it years ago.
