I actually like this idea.
Since the baby quilt im making is going to be used and washed a lot it is best to machine quilt the binding.
If I were making a quilt to use on a bed as a decrative spread or something you pass on to a family member do the hand quilting.
Your aunt is a wise woman.

I do both, depending on who the quilt is for. Baby quilts always get machine sewen.

I don't like doing it by hand and just tried doing one on the machine. It turned out pretty good, still need more pratice on the mitre corners.

I just like the way it looks and enjoy seeing the finished quilt in my hands for a while.

My hands hurt too badly to hand stitch the binding. I do the easy machine stitch on the binding. However I plan to enter a quilt next year at several shows and I am going to pay to have the binding put on and hand stitched to the back.

personally, I enjoy doing the back of the binding by hand... machine the front, turn, and then the hand work. I find it relaxes me... I also do it for others also, who don't like to do it themselves... Diana O.

I'm including some photos of a machine binding done using a tute shared with me by Homemother. It's a faux piping technique - it's very straightforward, and looks better in person than in these photos. I am very impressed, and will definitely use this technique again!! Thanks Homemother!!

i machine piece the tops but, i'm a dedicated hand quilter, i also hand bind, don't know i just enjoy it more

i agree i fine hand quilting and binding is relaxing too
