Just showed to our Dietetics faculty and they are laughing at the whole concept! Thanks for the giggle. One faculty member suggested a bottle of wine and a fine crystal goblet for the more sophisticated cook.

Does any one have a really beautiful pattern that you would recommend for a Jelly Roll? I have a couple of nice ones. (one all brights, one a Downton Abby and one black, gold and cream elegant Christmas prints) I am looking for a pattern that will show them off but one that will be at the intermediate level of quilting/piecing skill.

I know I can go googling but I thought you may have some that you liked for me to consider first.

    Thanks all.

I actually have a Tuesday tip!!! Someone asked me how to tell if they were cutting 100% cotton. They were worried some of their fabric was a blend. I found this for them and thought it may help someone else too.

    Perform the Burn Test

Cut small swatches of each fabric you want to test. Two-inch squares are fine.

Place a swatch in your fireproof container and ignite a corner of the fabric.

Pay attention to the odor of the smoke.

    Cotton smells like burning paper.

An odor similar to burning hair or feathers indicates wool or silk fibers, but silk doesn't always burn as easily as wool.

A darkish plume of smoke that smells like chemicals or burning plastic probably means the fabric is a cotton/polyester blend.

Examine the ashes after they've cooled.

Cotton ashes are soft and fine. They turn to dust when touched.

Black, brittle remnants that crush between your fingers indicate wool fibers.

Hard lumps are the remains of melted synthetic fibers.

Take one more step. Unravel a clump of threads from another small swatch of the fabric. Hold the clump with tweezers (over your flameproof container) and slowly move a small flame towards the clump.

Cotton fibers ignite as the flame draws near.

Synthetic fibers curl away from the heat and tend to melt.

I love the "Summer in the Park" quilt by Jenny Doan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5WgTyqB8Pc

I also did a "Bento Box" quilt with strips for a wedding gift, and it was one of my favorite quilts I've ever made.

    And there's always Log Cabin....

Happy birthday to me! I got more little treats yesterday. Thank you Pat for the rich beauties. Just love the colors. Kathy your fun collection arrived yesterday afternoon. The little sock monkey will show up in some little child's quilt I am sure. I am giggling because a number of the little cuts you sent are new colors of pieces that I have in my stash. We have great taste! And Marcia..... I just keep looking through your little package of treats wishing I had more of this fabric or more of that one. Thank you all. I am so enjoying opening my mail box to find a puffy little envelop from one of you all. (I am from southern Michigan so I can say y'all. )
