I've seen small, stick-like needle threaders meant to help thread sewing machine needles. Does anyone here use them? Do you find them helpful, dependable, and worth keeping on hand?

I have a "modern" Bernina that has an automatic threading function; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I also have three vintage machines that I'd love to have a threader for.

I've only used the cheap wire loops that you push through the needle. The wires don't hold up well. I finally got to where I can thread them without a threader. I do need my reading glasses though.

I have two types, I used them when I had just bought them but after a while I have ended up doing it by hand. I'm slightly nearsighted and I don't have much problems with threading as long as I have good light and maybe my contacts on. They work fine but I don't see them as essential unless you have trouble with your vision. I snap the end of the thread with scissors and it goes right though the needle hole with out fuzz, and I regularly use fine needles with smaller size hole as well as thicker needles.

Like Rodney, I use the cheap wire loops. I clamp the ends with pliers to form a sharp point. On the fine needles I use a loupe but my vision is not that good. I've also found the vintage wire threaders much better than the new Chinese.

Go Necchi. My favorite gadget. Works perfectly with the left to right threaded Necchi - just push it up against the needle clamp, slide the guide over the needle and the little hook finds the needle eye. Also works fine with the right to left threaded 201K (image) and probably many side threaders. No room between needlebar and presser bar on regular front threaders.[ATTACH=CONFIG]536782[/ATTACH]

I have a threader in a drawer somewhere I think I took it off a machine because it was annoying. I just use lots of light to see.

The little pusher sometimes gets bent and doesn't work properly. I have figured out how to straighten it. Actually I got it primarily for the sewing machine needle inserter. I like to use it for the front to back needles (when it works). My sister sent me these http://www.dritz.com/quilting-sewing...cessories/252/ and I like them, but I broke one trying to thread something I probably shouldn't have.
