Default $5000 for an "Appraised" Singer 66

I know they say a vintage sewing machine is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. But this Singer 66 is totally over the top. It's the price of a used car! https://kansascity.craigslist.org/at...910690001.html . The cabinet is even missing a draw. Hopefully the seller just accidentally put in a few too many zeroes in their price...

Just wanted to share it, since my DH and I found it kind of amusing. Hopefully the seller isn't just trying to now cover the cost of having such a ridiculous appraisal!

At least it has the bobbin cover plate. It also is missing the spring assist that has the holes for the belt to go through. I don't see any attachments, either. Oh, the serial number indicates that it was allotted in 1912.

I'd like to ask the appraiser who might buy it for even a 100th of that price. I'd also like to know who it was that would appraise it. Also what insurance company would pay the appraiser's price for a claim.

I have one in better shape I would sell for way less than that.

One thing I learned with vintage/collector car appraisals is that the price they give you is not necessarily the price you would get to sell it. The appraisers often inflate the price so that in case of a loss you can negotiate with the insurance company a bit and still come out with enough to buy another. Another thing is that all appraisers are not created equal. Some are better than others. Some just want to make the owner happy so they pay them. Some just don't know what they are doing. Because you have an appraisal, doesn't mean its a good one. Anyone can appraise things.

Maybe the seller forgot to put the decimal after the $50.

I have one that I paid $265 for four or five years ago. Nothing is missing from it. The only small problem is some sun fading on one end that can be easily fixed with oak stain. It sits in my entry way and evokes lots of fun comments from anyone who comes in the house. I enjoy having it.

If they can sell it for that, I have two available. A 1918 in that cabinet and a 1926 electric in a bentwood case. My son paid $75 for the treadle. I paid $5 for the e machine.
