bingo, got one! a 421g <3
I bid on this baby, labeled "defect machine" and got her home today
everything moves freely, the cam followers hug the cam edges perfectly. the 5 bobbins I bought on a whim for next to nothing from a fuzzy fuzzy pic fit
I was prepared for a lot of oil and love to get her moving but nothing but normal oiling was needed
however the timing was a bit off, someone must have been playing with because I can't see how the gears could slip. fixed now
the lead is missing though but I have one of those coming, the lead from my 320 is being repaired and it fits this one (or should do anyway)
as you can see the throat plate is missing

so I bid on this to get the throat plates, bobbins, and feet
fingers crossed she'll be mine too I'll keep her as a straight stitch only I think so I can use the zigzag plate on the 421g.... the chain never ends

I am sure they are much rarer on your side of the pond, I'm in Sweden and the German machines are not so unusual here it seems... however I have never seen a hand crank over here and I would love a nice one.
I just had my son in law buy me a postproduction one while he is in the states from sewclassic but I know they aren't really that nice....

I have one of the Chinese made hand crank units. It's a decent reproduction. It stared off a bit rough feeling, but I took the back off and greased the two gears. Then oiled the two shafts through their oil holes. I've mounted it on my 99K, Rusty and used it quite a bit. It has smoothed out a lot and works quite well.

It's no where near the quality a real Singer unit would be, but then they don't cost what a real Singer unit would either.
I'll be keeping my eyes out for one of those Singer 421Gs. My wife and I have a real fondness for the 401A and 500A machines and a 421G would fit right in with three we've already got. Since it has a free arm, we'd be able to sell one or more of the others too. That would be a win-win situation.

I have been pretty sick. Still suffering from the after effects of it. Got a DR apt Friday. Perhaps we can get some more questions answered and make some better progress.
My hand crank came on a beat to Hades Singer 127. It took me months to get that poor 127 cleaned and adjusted to work, but now it does. I just need a treadle cabinet for it.
