That's funny. Will have to see if my little one will do it.

The only Kenmore 158s that will chain stitch are the ones that have the little needle plate insert that you can switch from zigzag to straight stitch. Joe's has it. My 158.17550 also has it....& there are several other models but I can't name 'em! You remove the needle plate insert & put the chain stitch insert in. Then remove the bobbin case & insert the chain stitch adapter. They do make a nice chain stitch.....

The wilcox and gibbs is a good and interesting little machine. Almost any toy machine is chainstitch. So is the Singer 24.

I love sewing on my W&G Treadle. It makes a solid stitch. (W&G Chainstitch does not "unravel" if it breaks)

A Standard sewing machine makes a lovely chain stitch. Plus, it uses 15x1 needles. Have fun hunting!

I've been looking at the Kenmore machines, found the insert and adapter. While the seller has a list of machines they know it will fit, they don't list either of the two listed on this thread that will chain stitch.

There is a nice 158-17200 for sale about 200 miles away, so I emailed the seller to see if it would chainstitch. I'll be heading that way in about a week anyway. It has the ability to take cams, and I want that also.

Cathy,

There is at least two perhaps three versions of that needle plate chain stitch adapter that Pat mentioned. I had two chain stitch machines and each was different. I also have a spare one that came with some accessories that was different from the two other machines.
I was going to mention what Pat did yesterday, but some things got in the way and I had to leave the QB to do it.

Kenmore 1802 that has the chain stitch adapter, and a couple of Singer Touch-and-Sews that do it as well, though I have never used it on any of the machines.

You can always go for the Union Special, which people in the fancy jeans world go cuckoo for-
