I use a 1/16" drill bit in my Dremel tool to make the hole. I need to cough up the dough for a treadle belt tool, but that's not gonna happen any time soon.

I have the treadle tool but still have trouble with it tearing out. I have been thinking of trying floss instead of staples.

Also not that there are different diameters of leather belt AND different size belt pliers. Most issues I have seen folks have is using a large sized pliers and punch on thinner belts. I have a smaller pair of pliers that do a thinner hole, never an issue. These also cut at the same time as punching, unlike the Singer brand that is a two step process.

That's a great tool! I'll have to talk the boss into getting one.

Is that the one that started this slippery slope? I know I saw another pair that had a flattened side at the end of the handle which you indicated was to assist in removing the staple. Did it come that way or was it altered?

This was the 2nd pair I found. the others were Singer branded and the "puller" was original to the design

Did not know there were different sizes. Mine must be to large.
