Yes, I use Coats and Clarks multicolor machine quilting and crafts in my 15 and it worked well.

I use King Tut and Rainbow variegated thread on my 15-88 treadle to free motion quilt all the time.

So what do you guys think. Is this machine worth saving? Someone near me is selling it as a parts machine for $25 OBO.

I have done FMQ with my 15-90 using variegated threads, it worked great and I liked the look too.

Grammydar,
What's your other treadle machine? The Singer 66-1 red eye is pretty. Sometimes a machine won't pick up the bobbin thread because its either not threaded correctly or the needle isn't in correctly.

Uh oh - now you have me all excited and nervous too! It does have a bobbin - one like my "newer" old machines. Is that normal? I thought maybe it is newer than I originally thought because I thought all the old ones had those "bullet" type shuttles.

Here are a few pictures...I'm sad to say someone used this as their coffee table (certainly not me - my Husband would be put out of the house if he dared to put a cup on my sewing machine!) for some time so there are rings. Also the decals are starting to turn a bit silver and one is nearly scratched off. Is there any way to preserve them from any further damage? I do like to sew on this machine, and it's a great one for my kids because the bobbin is one that they are familiar with, but I don't want to ruin it.

OMG!!!!!!!!! Do you realize what you have????? You have one the earliest Model 15's with the Sphinx decal!!!! I have only seen one other - until I saw that machine I did not even know Singer used the Sphinx on their earliest 15's! How cool is that????????? I can't tell for sure from the picture, but what is the serial number?

Nancy

Ok - I don't want to get too excited until I know for sure, but how awesome is it if that is what I actually have?! :) Now I went back and looked at the serial number, I DID make a mistake there. The S is worn and old and looked like a 3, so I thought it had no prefixes but I was wrong, it has one. The serial is S722420. I don't see the number on the Singer website, unless I'm reading it wrong.

Oh, and is THIS what you mean by a bobbin? These old machines have odd names for things so I want to make sure I understand correctly. Here's a pic...

If all the parts were there, I'd offer $15 and see if she will take less. My sphinx is in worse shape that that one, decal wise, that is.

I just loosened a lift lever by taking the pressure off by removing the thumb screw and taking the spring and shaft out. Oiled (Penetrating oil will work) everything that moves the lever, and let soak in. The lever moved the next day. Do not put much pressure on the lever or it may break. If you can get inside move with a screwdriver.

It took us about an hour to discover it has a knee pedal!!! I have never seen one of those. We can't seem to get the presser foot to go down and I'm wondering if there's a trick to it or if it's frozen. She decided it was too much work for her to get into shape so she says I can have it if I want it, and if nothing else I am taking it to "tinker" on. I think it's pretty neat!

Wow - you have a bobbin - and the slide plate! Those things seem to go missing. Super machine!

Picked up a vintage machine at estate sale last week. Not sure what model. The decals are OK, has the shuttle and two bobbins, got the knee bar with it. Lite has the singer name embossed on the shade. It's OK for the $15 I think.

lee231 10-13-2011 01:57 PM

Bennet,
What do you use to get the machine to look so good? I've got a two spool that I started to clean and the decals came off when I cleaned it, luckily it was on the back side. The problem is the shellac is really dull and loose. TIA.
