Steve,

The 413 and other Stylist series machines were designed to be able to replace the gears. And it is a fairly straight forward job. The 247 that CMARAS has and others in that series were throw away machines. The bottom of the gear sits in a well and the new gear can not be slipped into place without removing the main shaft.
If you have a metal gear that matches the old one in all measurements you can interchange them. Do make sure you replace pairs of gears as a 'new' metal one would not work well (in the long run) against the remaining old plastic one.

Joe, would another gear set from a metal gear machine work? Like from a 237? I have wondered.

I have been called worse. I was wondering if the parts would be interchangeable.

If the 237 uses the same gears and they would interchange with the 413 then it might be a good thing to do. I have a 338 that has all metal gears and it works great. But they are not the same gears.

I have a Stylist 533 that the ZZ gear is shot - at least it doesn't work and makes a clunking noise. It sews a great SS, so I gave it my GD for quilting. If my son wants to fix it, I have a parts list for him.

I went shopping... CL had some rulers - I got a good bunch of quilting rulers for $15 - well worth my trouble I've been busy trying to keep up with sewing machine clean ups and some going out the door finally. I feel like I am meeting myself coming and going. There are some personal things going on as well - nothing life threatening that I know of. I had a blood test - the blood test proves I am NORMAL!!! I should have had a blood test YEARS ago. I've also been trying to organize some stuff around home and that means I get into things and make an awesome mess of it. I discover all kinds of stuff I didn't know I had. I get so distracted.... Once I tried to hire a girl to come in and help me organize. She had me sort it into piles of keep, throw away and give away. It all went into the keep pile and she freaked out. It is sewing stuff - you keep sewing stuff... or use it... you just don't throw it out... I had a blood test. I'm proven NORMAL!!! She needs to go get a blood test...
