tropit,
I've repaired several cases and to be honest they never look "right". Once they get damaged or start coming apart it's best to just strip them of the fabric or paper covering and do a complete reglue and recover.
I think most cases just had the cover material glued on. Some, like the bent wood and coffin top cases were shellac covered but I'm not sure any of those with a cover material had shellac on them.
Redoing a case isn't hard, but once you start you've got to do the whole thing. Otherwise it's just a half way job.

No I can't really. I just pic a fabric I like that is flexible enough to form around corners and fold, and use it. It does need to be a smooth type fabric though. My HOTHER case was done with a thin suede fabric and it attracts every piece of lint and cat hair in the house.

I would say vinyl will be best. You can get them at Joann's fabric store(not sure if you have them there) or any fabric store for that matter. I have a 301A case that needs cleaning. The kind that they use on a 301 case is so unforgiving as it's the weave kind of fabric. If I can't clean this one I will definitely use a vinyl fabric. Vinyl is smooth, easy to clean and doesn't attract dust as much as cloth one.

Any suggestions on removing the fabric from a 221 singer case? The glue in the joints has popped, due to water damage, but is fixable. Read where someone stripped the wood, stained and varnished it. Need to re-glue the case first. Hinges, lock are in really good condition, handle, not so much. Will need to see about finding a replacement. The fabric is really stuck though. Would paint stripper work? Is there something less toxic?
