With the presser foot down and the needle up, just to see what kind of pressure is there, if I try to slide the fabric under the foot, it slides back and forth freely, or either won't move at all, can't seem to find the in-between constant. Here are the adjustments I have tried changing at different intervals. .:
1.The position and amount of pressure on the
presser bar and foot, (using the knob on top, and the
little screw inside that puts tension on the bar)
2. How tight the presser foot lifter is.
3. The stitch regulator knob, which doen't seem to change
the stitch much for the amount of space it screws in and
out.
Do I just need to continue fidgeting with it until I get her to make that tiny little stitch and be happy with that? What is the LONGEST feasible stitch I should expect from her? What other things could I try? Oh, also the belt is not on her, I am just hand wheeling her. . . could THAT be a contributor to the problem? (Though if she was a handcrank would that matter?)

Kitsone, I had no concerns about the machine fitting in the trunk You could put three bodies in a full size Buick's trunk. The seller was worried yesterday, but she drives a Ford Focus.
My great grandson's team was not the winnng team today which means they are second in the state in class C. Not bad for a small country school in the farm country East of here.

I had the same problem with my Alvah when I got it (and the machine was a grimy mess)! I thought it was all kinds of things. I felt so silly when I fixed it. Hopefully your fix will be as simple.
Here are some suggestions:
#1 Clean the area with the feed dogs and be sure all sections of linkage are oiled all the way back to the stitch length adjustment.
#2 Move the stitch length adjustment to the largest you can get.
#3 Try again with the fabric, especially a thick set.
#4 If no difference, slide the adjuster back and and forth to ensure everything is moving.
#5 Try again.
Your feed dogs should move fabric regardless if the needle or bobbin have thread. My machine's lower end was dry and full of lint. Cleaning and lubing made a HUGE difference. Umm... Adjusting the stitch length helped too.

In response, Billy, I had that area open when I did your tute. I tried to clean real good when in the kerosene bath, but not knowing what it SHOULD look like at the time, there certainly could be something wrong. I will check what you said about the stitch regulator, put some more oil in the proper spots and get back to you. . .
Kitzone, there is a before cleanup photo of her on page 594, but I will post some closeups of the after so you can maybe see what you are looking for. . .
and redbugsullivan, the feed dogs move, but I'll doublecheck to see if there's more goop that I may have missed. . .
