Nancy - yes they do wear out but not to worry & no need to start filing on them yourself. Cathy (who hosted the TOGA) has a whole locker full of the various types of cams!! Seriously - a whole school locker! And they are not expensive at all. I think I paid $2 each for the ones I got from her to finish out my collection of the ones made for my 403.
Good thing to know. What is her username here? I have a 500 on layaway and thinking I might need a new set to have on hand. I don't know what all is included with the machine yet. Suppose to get that info soon.

Ouch. I haven't worn any out yet and I haven't seen any that were worn out. Makes the 401 and 500 look better doesn't it.

Charlee, I have a Davis made around 1886 - 1889. I cleaned it with Blue Magic TR 3 Resin Glaze. It has no decals to speak of left, but boy does the black paint shine! I cleaned until all the black stopped coming off - under that stuff was a beautiful shinny black paint job. I like it better the way it looks now then all rough with a few broken decals showing! At first, I was bummed out that I took all the decals off, but I like the slick feeling it has when I touch it now. It looks like a new machine, all shinny with no dull spaces! I'm thinking it is not the 'paint' that you are getting off, just the crude on top of the paint?

Sheryl, you just made my day! I didn't see that locker - now I want to get Candace's 319w! I bought another treadle today with a 66 from 1926 in the treadle. I am going to take out the 66 and put the 319w in if Candace sells me her 319w!

Yeah, and I just gave one of my best friends my 500a as an early Christmas present! I like my 503a better than the 500a, but maybe I should have re-thought that! Too late now!

Jan the 500 does a lot a stitches without a cam - built in! The 503a has to have a cam to work at all! You'll be ok!

Jan the 500 does a lot a stitches without a cam - built in! The 503a has to have a cam to work at all! You'll be ok!

Thanks Nancy for that information. Actually, I am not sure about the model but the gal at the sew&vac kept calling it a 500. I was so excited to find one that I kind of went into a daze!! I wasn't too informed on which model to get, but heard how well they sew from this site.

Possible, but I really think it's oxidized paint...you know how the finish on a car gets dull and icky? That's what I think this is....and I think it's deep into the finish.... I used the caranuba first, finished with the TR3...that helped. :)
